Monday and Tuesday, November 1 and 2

We began our study in Unit 2 of our text book.  The time period is after the Civil War (late 1800's ) and people are moving West.
On Monday we looked at the beginning of the unit and checked out some of the historic figures we will be seeing in this chapter.  There are people like Yee Fung Cheung, Andrew Carnegie, Queen Liliuokalani, John D. Rockefeller, Chief Joseph, Thomas Edison and Jane Addams.  We examined a map of this time and discussed how there were not fifty states yet, some of the areas were still territories. We learned the meaning of boom and bust and prospector.  I began reading Little House on the Prairie by Laura Ingalls Wilder to the students.  We will read a few minutes each day--it doesn't matter how old you are you still love for someone to read a good story to you.

On Tuesday we learned about homesteaders and how they could get 160 acres of land by living on it and working it for 5 years. Our main discussion was about how the Native Americans resisted the invasion of the settlers and how they  were forced to reservations.  Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce tribe is in our book and we learned how he tried to help his people escape to Canada.  We felt sympathy for him when we read his words to his people when he told them it was time to stop fighting.  Here is a small portion of what he said:
"I am tired.  My heart is sick and sad.  From where the sun now stands, I will fight no more forever."

Wednesday is a DARE lesson, then Thursday we will continue by looking more in depth at the life of the homesteaders.
