Monday, September 13th--Beginning the Civil War

Today we started the second chapter.  It begins our study of the Civil War.  We looked at maps showing the slave and free states and talked about the cultural and economic differences between the North and the South.  Our vocabulary words for lesson one are copied into our notebooks and we began reading the information in our textbook.

I returned last Friday's test papers to the students today, so they can tell you their grade!  We also had a discussion today about being careful when we answer a test question and make sure we put enough information and relevant answers.  I pointed out that one line under a question meant the answer would be short, while 5 or 6 lines required more information.
There were seven bonus questions on the board, worth one point each.  I also re-explained that when you have a bonus question that does not count against your score--you should make a guess at it.
